Sometimes dogs start to exhibit bad behaviours. If you take a look online or speak to your friends, they will often tell you that dogs only behave badly if they have not been trained properly. In fact, this could not be further from the truth.
If a child misbehaves, it does not mean their parent is to blame. The same can be said when it comes to your pet. Of course, their training can have something to do with it but it does not mean you have done something wrong. After all, we cannot be perfect all of the time, and the same goes for our dogs.
So, with that in mind, in this blog post, we are going to take a look at some common dog behaviour issues, as well as providing some advice on how you can correct the behaviour in question. However, if problems still persist, it is definitely worth looking into dog or puppy training. Sometimes only the help of a professional will do. There is nothing wrong with seeking help, so don’t overlook this option.
Submissive urination
Your dog is a submissive urinator if he flops down and begins to wet himself whenever you come to greet him. The first thing you need to do is see the vet to make sure that your dog does not have any health issues. If the problem is not related to your dog’s health, you should begin by making sure your dog lives in a confined error so that he does not soil around the house. When this happens, you will naturally get frustrated, and it only makes the issue worse. Pick somewhere your dog is going to feel safe. Whenever you greet your dog, try to do so as emotionally as possible. Dogs can pick up on your feelings, so if you act anxious or annoyed, it is only going to make the problem worse.
Playing too roughly
Another common issue we see in a lot of dogs is when they play too roughly. It is imperative that this is settled and stopped straight away. When your dog is acting in this manner, stop making sounds or moving. If you are on the floor, you should stand up. However, you need to be as still as possible, so keep your arms and hands as close to you as possible. This is so your dog knows that you are not playing anymore. Stop paying attention to your dog until he calms down. You should then make sure you lead your dog to a room for confinement or a create. Make sure this is for a considerable amount of time, so your dog realizes what he has done wrong. Play should only be permitted if it is managed. Whenever rough play commences, keep following this pattern until your dog does not do it anymore.
Digging
Digging is not bad behavior, although we assume it is. In fact, it is a natural canine instinct. Of course, this does not mean that you are going to want your entire garden dug up. So, what is the solution? The best thing to do is find a part of your garden whereby your dog won’t do too much damage if he digs. You can then encourage your dog to dig in that spot and you should praise him whenever he does.
Begging
Last but not least, we have begging, which is a bad habit in a lot of dogs. This is one of those issues that is a lot easier to prevent than it is to cure. This is why it is important to establish consistent eating habits and rules from the beginning. A good option is to make sure your dog is occupied whenever you are having your dinner. You might have to suffer a bit of whining and barking but don’t give in.
So there you have it: some of the most common dog behavior issues. Hopefully, you now have a better understanding regarding why your dog is acting a certain way and what you can do about it.
